Title Analysis

Why do you think the novel is titled The Joy Luck Club? How do all the stories tie together? Also, consider the author. Was she part of the Joy Luck Club or was she simply recounting another's experience? Does the novel have any real base at all? Or is it purely fiction?

I think that the novel is titled The Joy Luck Club because in Chinese ''joy luck'' is one word. And since the women created the club to make their own happiness in times of despair it makes sense that they wish themselves joy and luck.

I think the stories in ''Feathers From a Thousand Li Away'' are a description of how they ended up in America. And also about their separate lives before immigrating. In the preface it said that the lady brought a goose to America to represent the better life they would have. But she ended up only having the feather and that would represent her hopes and dreams from China for her daughter to fulfill.

I agree with Jimmy about the making their own joy and luck part. I believe their stories are their experiences with luck in their earlier lives. I think the club also serves to link together women. Their daughters may have become Americanized so that the mothers only have each other. They can find joy with each other and hope for luck so that the daughters may understand them.

Chloe I don't get what you mean. Their lives were horrible T-T

Uhhh.. I think it's called the Joy Luck Club because .. I AGREE WITH JIMMY. "And since the women created the club to make their own happiness in times of despair it makes sense that they wish themselves joy and luck." That's what I would've said, but Jimmy is quick like a fox.

Chloe made a good point about how the club links the women together. Since the children are all grown up in America, they need some way to keep in touch with their Chinese roots.

I agree with Chloe and Jimmy, the club served as a getaway from the despair of the world. These stories seems way too far fetched to be true, this is purely fiction.
