Daughters vs. Sons

Isn't it a coincidence that all these women have daughters? Why do you think Amy Tan decided to focus the stories on a mother-daughter basis. In China, boys were always seen as superior and more prosperous/good for the family. What do you guys think about this? Why did she choose to write about daughters rather than sons.

I believe Amy Tan decided to go with mother-daughter relationships because she is a woman herself. She probably had relationships with her own mother and daughter and knows the emotions that are associated with it. I also think she used daughters intentionally. Men had power and were often the center. By portraying the story from a different point of view, she is able to show the hardships not in public view. Plus, women have a much more intersting story. When following a woman's life, it is undoubtedly more interesting than a man's. Women tend to read into things and make a careful decision.

Are you saying that women are more interesting then men? I don't think there is a considerable difference. Everyone has their own stories that appeal to different people.

I do agree that Amy Tan probably went with the mother-daughter stories due to her own relationships with her mother.

Aren't you contradicting yourself Jimmy? I agree with Chloe on some points. I believe there was a purpose with only the mother-daughter relationships. It showed the sexisms that existed in both American and Chinese traditions. This leads to a main theme of the challenges of cultural change.

How am I contradicting myself? I said I don't think women are any more interesting then men. Sex plays no significant part in it.
