Do you think that each short story has it's own theme? Do you see any recurring themes of the short stories? What about recurring themes inside sections? Can the theme be revealed from each sections preface story?
What's a theme anyway? Here's a refresher.

I believe that all the short stories contain a theme. It is usually revealed in the last line. They all show a mother-daughter relationship. This seems to be the overall theme. There is a specific theme for each short story, which I believe are all different. The preface of the section may give a hint of what the story's about, but not the theme, I don't think.
PS. Please don't ask me what the themes are. It's hard enough coming up with one for a book. And those have lots of evidence.
Maybe there's one theme overall. Is it kind of like... "Thou shall obey your parents" or something? I know that's a commandment, but it can be a theme too, right? Or maybe it's showing that all the children don't know how to respect their moms. So the theme could be...the neglection of parents' wishes until they're gone (?). Anyways, I agree with Chloe. It's a mother-daughter relationship.
Another theme that has been reoccurring throughout the book is the challenge of cultural change. Some stories have a mother and daughter with a communication barrier between them, one knows some Chinese while the other knows some English. This brings us to the difference between American tradition and Chinese tradition, being disobedient to your mother isn't as bad in American tradition as oppose to Chinese tradition, I guess this somewhat ties to what Hillary is saying.
